Teams Up for Rebuilding Together
DENVER – On Saturday, April 30th 2005, long-time
employees Colin Morrison & Terry Dugan gave up an entire
Saturday volunteering to help a a grandmother on a fixed income
who has little time or money to tackle necessary repairs on
her home, while raising her six grandchildren. Their efforts
were part of National Rebuilding Day, an event typically held
on the last Saturday in April, where the metro Denver chapter
of Rebuilding Together rehabs up to 30 homes, all within the
time frame of a single day.
More than 30 members from the National Association
of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) Rocky Mountain Chapter brought
together their tools, supplies, and abilities. Working jointly
on a project with non-profit agency, Rebuilding Together Metro
Denver, NARI members lent their time, talents, and supplies
to assist .
Rebuilding Together and its partners and sponsors
repair homes for low-income, elderly, and disabled homeowners,
to help promote and retain warmth, safety, and independence.
NARI was supplied with a long list of repairs desperately
needed on their client’s home. Crews will split up to tackle
such jobs as concrete repair, painting, re- grading the yard
to divert water, plaster repair, stair repairs, kitchen updates,
and screen and storm window replacement. NARI volunteers will
also perform an electrical inspection and replace outdated
outlets and fixtures. “As a group of remodeling professionals
and suppliers, the work that Rebuilding Together performs
in the community is a perfect fit for us to support as an
organization,” said Carla Roden, Team Captain for the NARI
project home. “We have already had an opportunity to evaluate
the home and what it needs to bring it up-to-date”
Since its inception in 1999, the metro Denver
nonprofit has rehabbed a total of 115 homes and 6 nonprofit
facilities. Through donated supplies and materials, Rebuilding
Together is able to leverage $4 of services for every $1 donated.
The work of Rebuilding Together could not happen without the
generosity of hundreds of skilled and unskilled volunteers
joining together to transform homes, like those volunteers
from NARI. Last spring, nearly 1000 volunteers reported to
“work,” performing hundreds of repairs such as installing
new roofs, carpets, floors, wheelchair ramps, deadbolts, windows
and appliances. Unskilled volunteers helped with painting,
cleaning, and weatherizing to make homes clean and comfortable.
