OUR
WORK IS BUILDING
Why
We Do It
Here at Classic Homeworks, we are committed to being involved
members of the community which has given us so much. In addition
to providing our expertise and skill to our great Clients,
we feels it's important to also offer our services to those
desparately in need of a home that fits their unique situations.
How
We Do It
Classic Homeworks has teamed up with the Home Builders
Foundation (HBF), a wonderful local organization
whose mission is to "use the unique resources of the
building industry to provide housing, accessibility, and education
to help those in need, making lives more livable."
History
of the HBF
Founded in 1993, the Foundation's primary area of focus is
to help those who desperately need enhancements for accessibility
in their homes, such as wheelchair ramps, accessible entry-points,
and modified appliances and amenities. To accomplish this,
the HBF partners with building industry suppliers, homebuilders,
subcontractors and local volunteers.
The
Story of a Family in Need
Gary Kasson, a 30-year law enforcement veteran in
Denver, and his wife, Carol, were planning to make a change
in their life. What they did not plan on was that change involving
a motorcycle accident and a brain injury.
On August 15, 2003, Gary was riding his motorcycle home from
an interview as a correctional officer at a Southern Colorado
prison. Before reaching his Englewood home, he was rear-ended
by a drunk driver on I-25. From that day, his life was forever
changed.
He spent the next five months in various Colorado hospitals,
going through rehabilitation for his brain injury. His wife,
meanwhile, was adjusting to a completely new lifestyle, which
included 24-hour supervision of her once strong and independent
husband. In addition to his brain injury, he also needed a
wheelchair to complete the simple tasks of living each day.
The Kasson’s home proved to be ill-equipped for its
newly disabled homeowner. Without wheelchair access, it was
very difficult to get Gary into his own home let alone be
able to use his own bathroom. Major modifications were needed,
so Carol contacted the Home Builders Foundation, whose purpose
is to help victims of tragedy that need to incorporate accessibility
features in their homes.
What We're Doing
Today, Classic Homeworks is helping the HBF retrofit the first
floor hallways, back entrance, side ramp and bathroom to improve
Gary’s mobility and make life just a little easier for
Gary’s caretakers.

| BEFORE
Part of the vanity was removed to accommodate Gary’s
wheelchair. |
DURING
With the old vanity and shower removed, work begins to
install accessible features |
|
|
| BEFORE
The hallways are much too narrow for a wheelchair. |
DURING
Interior walls are moved and will have handrails to improve
mobility for Gary |
|
|
| AFTER
The shower is now more open and wheelchair accessible.
A bench and support bars have also been added to ensure
safety and allow Gary mobility. |
AFTER
The toilet now has support bars which lower from the wall
for support. In addition a support bar on the wall assists
with stability while the large area under the sink accommodates
Gary's wheelchair. |
On
October 20, 2005 the Home Builders Foundation awarded Classic
Homeworks with a Remodelor Award for the work we completed
on the Kasson job in 2004!!
