Mission
To create
a healthy, harmonious and loving home for our family, our
friends and our neighbors while minimizing the environmental
impact on our planet.
Objectives
The
homeowners needed to nearly double the square footage of their
home to accommodate the needs of their growing family. They
loved their 1912 Bungalow home in Denver’s Historic Washington
Park neighborhood and decided to add on rather than move.
Classic
Homeworks designed the addition to fit both the family’s needs
and character of neighborhood, all while preserving their
beloved xeriscaped yard, garden, and deck.
The homeowner’s wanted their new addition to encourage family
togetherness. To achieve this, all of the bedrooms were designed
and built on the same floor. A semi-private Family room on
the main floor allows the family to view and listen to entertainment
together. New glass pocket doors connecting the Living room
to the Family room provide occasional privacy and also help
the parents monitor TV viewing habits while cooking dinner
or reading in the next room. Additionally, the size of the
home office/den was increased to accommodate two computer
stations, a necessity for today’s modern families.
The
homeowner’s love for entertaining family and friends meant
that the home needed to flex to meet the needs of small or
large groups. Now, the Living & Family room flow easily
into the kitchen and out onto the side deck that overlooks
the beautifully landscaped yard and patio. For overnight guests,
a private guest suite in the basement provides extra comfort
and privacy.
Additionally,
the homeowner’s sense of environmental responsibility led
them to design and build the addition using as many environmentally
friendly materials and techniques as was affordable and available.
Through smart design and quality craftsmanship, the homeowner’s
enjoy a home nearly double the size of their original with
utility costs only 30% higher.
Results
The
new addition blends effortlessly with the original bungalow
through matching architectural details such as bead board
sheathing and stucco board and batten finish with detail to
match the original trim. The outcome is a visually appealing
structure that meets the needs of the homeowners for years
to come, echoes the historic residential architecture, and
minimizes the environmental impact on our planet.
